The brim and the interior of the horn are mounted in silver gilt; the horn is held by a satyr sitting on a rock, also made from silver gilt; marked with the Augsburg pine cone (rather indistinct) and "EA",.
Provenance
According to the 1858 inventory, the cup was given to the Kunstkabinett in 1836 by duke Ernest I of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Lost at Schloss Friedenstein in 1945, the beaker came into the possession of the Erfurt antiques dealer Kurt Müller in 1948, whose heirs had the important piece auctioned off by Nagel in Stuttgart in 2006. After the Foundation Schloss Friedenstein intervened, the goblet was confiscated by the public prosecutor's office. This was followed by a lengthy investigation, the result of which was that, although the theft and sale of the piece were illegal, neither the last owners nor the Nagel auction house could be proven to have acted with intent to receive stolen goods. Reacquired from art trade in 2007 with the support of the Ernst von Siemens Art Foundation and the Rudolf August Oetker Foundation Bielefeld.
