Description
The so-called "Oldenburg horn" is decorated with silver gilt fitting and six enamelled coats of arms (Oldenburg, Brandenburg, Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Iceland); four scenes carved into the ivory: a. a knight rescuing a lion from a dragon's claws, b. St George, c. a hunting scene, d. knight tournament; the silver gilt fitting is made up of trailing oak branches with acorns.
Provenance
According to the 1830 inventory the horn was bought in Florence; according to Bube (in his book Das Herzogliche Kunstkabinet zu Gotha, 1869) reports that it was found in Lower Italy near Nola and was probably brought to Italy by king Christian I of Denmark who made a pilgrimage to Rome in 1473.
