Description
A hermit kneeling in a cave in front of a large Bible, which is propped up on a low vault against a satchel and a basket full of skulls; behind these objects, there is a crucifix; a book stands on the floor next to the hermit on the right, and other books lie next to a candle in a wall niche; a lantern hangs further up, and cabbage heads lie behind the hermit.
Provenance
From the collection of duke Ernest II of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (cf. 1826 inventory). In 1943 still present in the museum (catalog 1943, p. 171); current location Pushkin Museum Moscow, object: 101041, number: ЭЖ-868 (Gerrit, "Saint Jerome", 41.5 x 34 cm).
