Description
Signed: GDOY (ligated, on the spinning wheel); an old woman sits on a spinning wheel and looks straight ahead; she wears a blue apron over a red dress and a grey, fur-trimmed collar, as well as a stiff grey cap; on the table on the right, there are bread, cheese and a beer pitcher; on the left, the window stands open; a large basket hangs on the wall, an earthenware pot lies on the floor; the picture shows the full mastership of the painter by depicting the cosy athmosphere of a living room with its twilight and all the furniture in perfect natural truth.
Provenance
According to Hofstede de Groot, the painting was sold to Barend Kooi on June 11, 1800 at Jan Gildemeester Jansz. in Amsterdam (lot. no. 38, for 1220 guilders) and then, on July 31, 1811 in Dordrecht to B. de Haart by A. v. d. Werff from Zuidland (lot. no. 25, for 1300 guilders); Rathgeber passes on that duke August of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg acquired the painting from the art dealer Palmer; bought in 1819, for the sum of 13,000/15,000 thalers. Exhibited in room 12 in 1935 (reorganization 1935); transferred to Reinhardsbrunn in 1943 (catalog 1943, sheet 168); brought to Coburg by Eberhard Schenk zu Schweinsberg by messenger in 1945 (ThHStA Weimar, file C 1624, fol. 139: transcript of 28.4.1953); sold at Sotheby's in 1987; auctioned by Christie's in 1996 from private collection; current location: collection Dr. August Oetker, Bielefeld.
