Wool embroidery
Since 28 October 1935 Swiss National Museum, acquired from Siegfried Oppenheimer; undated-28 October 1935 Siegfried Oppenheimer, Frankfurt; […]; 1611 Basel or Alsace
Provenance research: The carpet was purchased in 1935 by Siegfried Oppenheimer (1891–1973), an art dealer from Frankfurt, who was staying at the Baur au Lac in Zurich at the time. Oppenheimer fled to England from the Nazi regime at an unknown date. In 1939, his wife and son were staying in Switzerland, as letters prove. Whether the sale was related to Oppenheimer's flight cannot currently be reconstructed, but a confiscation due to Nazi persecution cannot be ruled out.
