Description
Wool embroidery depicting Abraham's sacrifice in a round medallion. Isaac kneeling on the altar while Abraham raises his sword. The angel above catches the weapon. Scene set in hilly terrain. The four coats of arms point to Basel or Alsace. The image is framed by a green laurel wreath, around which a banner is wound. It is dated 1611. Cross-stitch, coat of arms partly with stem stitch. Colours faded and parts of the right-hand city view and sky re-embroidered.

Provenance research: The carpet was purchased in 1935 by Siegfried Oppenheimer (1891–1973), an art dealer from Frankfurt, who was staying at the Baur au Lac in Zurich at the time. Oppenheimer fled to England from the Nazi regime at an unknown date. In 1939, his wife and son were staying in Switzerland, as letters prove. Whether the sale was related to Oppenheimer's flight cannot currently be reconstructed, but a confiscation due to Nazi persecution cannot be ruled out.
