Lidded tankard
Foot rim, cylindrical wall, bulged lid, knob in the form of a cast female figure with a burning heart (allegory of love), round handle with sculpted cherubs. Wall, foot rim and lid with engraved decoration: medallions with vines and fruits on the foot rim and lid, scenes from "The Birth of John the Baptist", "Jesus and the Children" and "The Feeding of the Five Thousand" on the wall, based on Conrad Meyer (1618-1689), "Des Neuwen Testaments Unsers Herrn Jesu Christi vornembste Historien und Offenbarung". Inside the lid is a medallion with the Escher-Landolt alliance coat of arms.
Since 19 November 1938 Swiss National Museum, Zurich, acquired from Arthur Kauffmann; undated – 19 November 1938 Arthur Kauffmann, London, presumably in commission for Hedwig Ullmann; […]; undated - at least 1928 Hedwig & Albert Ullmann, Frankfurt; [...]; around 1700 Hans Jakob Ziegler (1650-1716), Zurich
Provenance research: Hedwig Ullmann (1872-1945) and her family were persecuted by the National Socialists. They were forced to auction off part of their collection between 1935 and 1937, but some of the objects were taken to Arthur Kauffmann (1887-1983), a friend and art dealer, in 1938. Kauffmann was also persecuted and fled from Frankfurt to London in 1938. Hedwig Ullmann and her relatives left Germany for Australia in the same year. The sale of the lid tankard to the SNM is probably related to the family's flight, which is why it may have been confiscated as a result of Nazi persecution.
