Provenance
The oldest known museum inventory of provenance is an entry on an index card from 1946 to around 1951: Acquisition: purchase, provenance: Art trade. On 23 April 2025, the Potsdam Museum received a reference to the auction catalogue ‘Hans W. Lange (Berlin): Various German art possessions: paintings by old and new masters (mostly from the Budge Collection, Hamburg), sculpture, bronzes, furniture, tapestries, textiles, silver, porcelain, majolica, faience; auction on 6 and 7 December 1937.’ The goblet is listed there under lot 351 (with plate illus.), the abbreviation of the previous owner is given as (41) = La., Berlin. It is suspected to be a Nazi-confiscated cultural artefact.
