The Städtische Galerie Stuttgart acquired the painting in 1954 from the Stuttgart art dealer Hermann Combé. Nothing is known about the consignor or the previous provenance. There is a gap in the provenance between the year the painting was created and its purchase in 1954. It is not clear from the little information that has survived whether the painting was bought at auction or simply purchased from the Combé art dealership. Combé was one of the most notorious dealers under National Socialism.
