The Städtische Galerie Stuttgart acquired the painting on 16 November 1951 at an auction held by the Stuttgart art shop Hermann Combé. Nothing is known about the consignor or the previous provenance. There is a provenance gap between the period of the painting's creation (before 1924) and its auction.
On the back of the painting is the label of the Stuttgart mirror, frame and glass wholesaler Wilhelm Weber. The company owners Eugen Weber Senior (24 March 1879-?) and master glazier Richard Weber (13 May 1880-1946), sons of the company founder, master glazier Wilhelm Weber, had to undergo a denazification procedure after the war. Their company was placed under the administration of a trustee by the American military government.
