"Karl Neumeyer Library"
Karl Neumeyer was a professor of law at Munich University. As a Jew, he lost his professorship and suffered further reprisals. Nevertheless, he remained in Germany while his two sons emigrated. When he and his wife Anna, née Hirschhorn, were to lose their house and be ghettoised in July 1941, they took their own lives.
Karl Neumeyer's library was confiscated by the Nazi regime. According to one source, the library was to be auctioned off on 12 August 1941. It is unclear whether the auction actually took place. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Munich bookshop Blendl sold numerous books from Karl Neumeyer's library. All currently known acquisitions of Neumeyer books were made at Blendl.
In the restitution proceedings, monetary compensation was awarded for the loss of the library.
The two works listed in Lost Art are examples of a total of 7 books and 25 volumes of a journal in the libraries of the Department of Law at the University of Bonn.
In view of the compensation paid, the heirs decided that the books should remain in their current location. One work was returned to the heirs because of its special remembrance value.
