Provenance
Consigned to the Galerie Brockstedt Hamburg by an unknown owner at an unknown time between 1970 and June 1971. Then purchased by the manufacturer Heinz Friederichs from Frankfurt am Main; sold to the Gallery of the City of Stuttgart in 1982. Provenance gap between the painting's creation in 1919 until its delivery to the Brockstedt Gallery in 1971 by the unknown owner. There are no documents on prior provenance and/or change of ownership. Both Otto Dix and his biographer Fritz Löffler knew nothing more about the painting at the end of the 1950s. In the second Dix monograph by Fritz Löffler, which contains an index of the paintings (Dresden 1960, Dresden 1966; West Edition Vienna/Munich 1966/67), Männerkopf is not listed among the paintings produced in 1919.

In der zweiten Dix-Monographie von Fritz Löffler, die ein Verzeichnis der Gemälde enthielt (Dresden 1960, Dresden 1966; Westausgabe Wien/München 1966/67) ist "Männerkopf" unter den Gemälden, die 1919 entstanden, nicht aufgelistet. Keine Erwähnung in Ausstellungskatalogen zu Otto Dix aus dem Zeitraum 1950 bis 1970. Männerkopf wurde nirgendwo ausgestellt und wurde weder in einem Katalog abgebildet noch besprochen. In dem von der Galerie der Stadt Stuttgart 1971 herausgegebenen Katalog zu ihrer Dix-Ausstellung "Männerkopf" unter der Katalognummer 26 auf S. 63 genannt. Dort wird als Provenienz Heinz Friederichs, Frankfurt am Main, angegeben. Es ist das erste zu belegende Mal, dass das Bild öffentlich zu sehen war.
