Ernst Ruben was persecuted because of his Jewish origin, but because he lived in a "privileged mixed marriage" he was not deported. He died on 19 January 1944 from an injury he had contracted on 2 January 1944 because he was refused the medical care offered in two hospitals because of his Jewish origin. Ernst Ruben left behind his wife and two children.
