Description
Handmade and painted banner. Made of red and blue silk ribbon, in an elongated rectangular shape with a semicircular border at the bottom. On the red side inscriptions in round type, embroidered in yellow artificial silk in loop stitch: "Arb. Radfahrerverein Osterode a/H. 1922". In the centre of the four-line inscription a painted bicycle emblem, within it in white colour and Fraktur type the bay letter "S" (for "Solidarität"), below it, also painted: "A.R.B." (for Arbeiter-Radfahrer Bund), both together for the umbrella organisation of the association Arbeiter-Radfahrer Bund Solidarität, surrounded by green foliage. The side panels and initials of the inscription are embroidered with ornaments in gold thread in the manner of Gothic book illumination. The blue side shows the inscription "Frisch Auf!", "Ihr freien Radler aufgewacht, Der Morgen grüßt, die Sonne lacht!", "gegr. 1907", also embroidered in round type with yellow artificial silk. In the centre, very skilfully painted, the depiction of a cyclist with a bicycle, wearing a white shirt and knee breeches, saluting with a cap. On both sides, the upper field of the banner is trimmed with a fringed border of gold thread; such a border also adorns the lower edge. One of the original three gold thread tassels at the lower edge is missing. Five loops are attached to the top of the banner for attachment to the staff. A red and blue ribbon is knotted to the middle loop, with the inscription embroidered in orange thread "Gewidmet von eurer Sportgenossin" and "Vorwärts immer, Rückwärts nimmer!". On the left and right are other decorative tassels and bows without inscriptions.
Provenance
The Osterode Museum purchased the banner on 15 December 1982 from the antique dealer Hans Kühn, Waestraße 15, 3360 Osterode, from his private estate. The further origin is unknown. The umbrella organisation of the workers' cyclists A.R.B. Solidarität was banned and de-installed by the National Socialists in May 1933.
