Edzard II, Count van Oost-Friesland
In terms of content, the engraving shows a bust portrait in an oval of a somewhat gaunt, squinting man with a short trimmed chin and moustache, who has very asymmetrical facial features. He wears a dark coat with a fur collar as well as a shawl on his head and above it a contemporary typical velvet beret with jewellery applications. A heavy chain with pendant sits on his chest. Below the oval is a pedestal and in its centre a coat of arms. The coat of arms resembles the East Frisian one only to a limited extent. In a shield at the top left is a harpye, at the top centre an eagle, at the top right two lying crescents above a wall above a lying crescent, at the bottom left an upright lion, at the bottom centre a standing bear, at the bottom right two crossed flagpoles. To the left of the coat of arms is written in capitals "Edzard II, Graaf" and to the right "van Oost-Friesland". The engraving is signed "J. W. Kaiser sculps."
The artist was Johann Wilhelm or Jan Willem Kaiser (Amsterdam, 5.1.1813 - Leiden, 29.11.1900). Kaiser was not a full-time artist, but an art historian at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam and from 1873 director of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Since his artistic work was only part-time, little is known about it and dates are mostly uncertain.
