Altar wing (Apostel Thaddäus, Philipp and Jacob)
Altar wing, German, c. 1520.
Depicting the apostles Thaddeus, Philip and James.
Oil on coniferous wood in the (modified) original frame on the reverse. Partial frame as back for relief sculptures. With frame 111 x 70 cm. Old inscription in chalk on the side of the frame: Bellstedt 1956 Inv. 1394-2005/1. The panel is heavily damaged and has been puttied and painted over several times.
In 1986 the panel was in the restoration workshop of the Kunsthalle Bremen, where Christiane Rohland, student and successor of Lilly Bellstedt, had worked for 15 years, and restoration work had begun by Zoltan Boldizar (interim restorer). Barbara Wiemers found it there and continued to work on the panel in 1994 until it was addressed that the ownership situation had not been clarified. No clarification was possible at that time.
Lilly Bellstedt had once visited Mrs Wiemers in the Kunsthalle and bequeathed her workshop to the Kunsthalle. She died in 1993, and neither she nor anyone in the family ever inquired about the painting. In her photo folder is a photograph of the counterpart during a restoration. The cover is labelled "Tafelbild".
